About Us
Our Namesake
Aspasia Collaborative takes its name from Aspasia of Miletus, a philosopher who arrived in Athens as an immigrant - a woman with no claim to citizenship and no voice in the public square. Despite her community standing, she is still recognized for her intellectual influence, as a peer of Socrates and Plato, a trusted companion to Pericles and the mother of their son.
In a society that denied women and outsiders access to the rights held by men, she claimed her place by using her voice. She did not wait for permission; she just showed up and did the work.
The name itself carries a second meaning; Aspasia is a derivative from the Greek word aspasios - "welcome"; one who is warmly received.
We carry both meanings forward in a time when every voice counts, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, ability, legal status, or orientation. We carry this grounding principle through every engagement.
